Cicely’s father is a cottager; a few years ago he broke his leg, and it has mended badly so he walks with a limp and cannot get much work as a day labourer. The Acklands’ cottage has a sunny plot of ground behind it, and they grow as many vegetables as they can, and keep chickens and rabbits. Robert cannot walk far, although he works hard in the garden, but Joan often takes the best of the vegetables to sell in the market.
