Hipolite and his family originally come from Hertfordshire, and are moderately well-to-do - they rent two fields from the lord of the manor. They have turned one into an orchard, and grow lots of kinds of fruit for sale, including apples, pears and plums; his parents also raise delicate vegetables for the London markets. He and his brother Benedict go to a dame school for a few hours each day, and also help with the fruit picking in the autumn.
