Humphrey's parents keep a well-run licensed ale house and bakery in Clapton - father is the baker, mother serves the ale in the parlour. They make good money and there is almost always plenty of food in the house. The disadvantage to all this is that, because there are so many customers, both parents are very busy and the house is noisy all day and most of the night. And he is forever having to wash down tables and clean tankards and serve bread and cheese and help with the dough.
