Thomas's parents are moderately prosperous cottagers who make some extra money by breeding and selling dogs - people from miles around come to buy them. He often gets to exercise the dogs on the marshes; feeding them all is occasionally a problem, but they hunt rabbits for themselves, and he sometimes takes one home for the pot. The dogs all live in a shed at the end of the extra field that was bought when his parents married. It is planted with vegetables and an apple tree.
