Ursula's parents died of plague last summer, and she has come to Hackney looking for work, as she had to leave her cottage in Dalston because she couldn't pay the rent. Her mother was a seamstress and taught her to sew, so sometimes she gets a day's work mending or cleaning. Some friends in Hackney let her sleep in their barn. She spends as much time as possible with her friend Annys Burton, who is also homeless.
