William's father is a vintner in the City of London, and visits him and his mother and sister on Sundays – during the week he lives in a lodging house. The family stays in Hackney because the air is better and William used to be delicate when he was younger. William is ambitious, and is looking for ways of avoiding following him in this comfortable, but to his way of thinking, dull life. He wants to catch the eye of someone important and join their household - but how, against his father’s wishes?
